What Can Be Done With Old Engine Oil

Store it in a safe container; I can use an oil drainer that can actually be used to safely store old oil, but I can still transfer it to old empty oil bottles to empty the can.

If you want to dispose of it, ask a local garage - they can take it from you for free or for a small fee, or they can advise you where you can take it for recycling. Here in the UK, I usually take old oil that I want to dispose of at a local recycling center, where they have large oil banks for this purpose.

You can use old engine oil, but keep in mind that it is a lot more toxic and dirty than the new oil. It still lubricates and protects metal surfaces that move against each other. It is the best idea to first strain / filter it to remove the worst of the contaminants. Avoid coming into contact with the skin while handling it, and avoid using it in places that are likely to come into contact with people's skin.

You may wonder, if it is possible to filter it and clean it, then why does it have to be removed from the engine? The answer is that the filter in the engine allows hot oil to flow rapidly under pressure, so it cannot actually filter the oil completely effectively. A cheap paper filter can filter oil very well if you have time to wait when it passes slowly. Personally I wouldn't trust it back in the engine after filtering it, even if it looked very clean, but after filtering it would be better for reuse for other purposes.

But refining savings increase over time, and the world's total annual production of used motor oil is nothing but trivial. Why this is, for many people, a "closed-loop" system that repeatedly pours the same oil back to work has such a strong appeal.

If you are concerned about the environment, then by all means use refined oils again, These are fine for oil vehicles, as long as they are certified, and are reusing something again and again, it's always a good thing to do instead of wasting a valuable resource.
